I went for a drive today out to Wivenhoe Dam via Mount Glorious and I was actually hoping for some inspiration to write some poetry. I have committed myself to write 100 quality poems by the end of 2026 for my second collection. However, nothing immediately sprang to mind. I have my photos, and I will reflect more, but even though the scenery was spectacular, no metaphysical truths emerged. And I am okay with that.
Sometimes writing is just building the foundation or the framework, setting up the great scene or brilliant dialogue. Sometimes it is more pedestrian, from here to there as the plot needs to move along. I believe that Lucas is 80% creative genius and 20% WTH? But it is that 80% that changed the face of science fiction and the 20% that keeps me going, thinking…. How would I approach that differently?
I have been reading Mysteries of Udolpho from the suggestions in September’s Ghosti Section. It is interesting to draw connections to Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (I feel that Radcliffe’s is a better story), but there is sufficient room for both authors to create different perspectives on female disenfranchisement from the Goth and Georgian eras. I fantasise about what I would do in this time frame, but realistically, as a peasant, not much. My only hope would be through the Church and it is not lost on me as a Christian the nature of this double-edge sword.
I would encourage you to find inspiration where you can, nature, art, previous works etc. But add your perspective, your voice, your lens to the work. Even if it is not commercial successful, it is your voice out there for everyone to hear. And who knows, if you can find your audience, then maybe it will be a win-win scenario. SSBK – Jim Cobb
