Entry 007 Suspension of disbelief

Last night as I went to bed, we ran out of gas for the water heater. So, I headed outside to switch tanks, my wife made the observation, “it always runs out late at night.” I went out the door and the physicist took over, 2 young men and 2 old people. We shower for about 5 minutes apiece and they shower for about 30 minutes so there is a 14% chance that it runs out during our shower (1/7) and 86% chance for them (6/7). My wife says that is crazy, just say 15%. Interestingly, that is the part that she ‘disbelieved’.

And that brings us to today’s thoughts. We can analyse things to the nth degree, but we are capable of suspending disbelief if the story is entertaining. However, there are things that ‘break’ this false reality and suddenly the curtains fall away, and it can be difficult in returning to enjoying rather than criticising the book or movie. I have written another micro-fiction and although I try to stay within sight of plausibility, this one will have critics saying, “that is not how cryptocurrencies work.” Well, maybe not, but does the story entertain you and allow you to suspend disbelief?

High frame refresh rates have not been popular because they immediately draw viewers out of the film as the eyes are unable to suspend disbelief. I wonder in the future if there will be a work around, maybe brain wave transmissions. And that is the realm of futuristic science fiction, maybe in the future cryptocurrencies will work that way. And lastly, 14% sounds more scientific that about 15% (it is actually 14.3%). Which number allows a better suspension of disbelief? Until next time, stay safe and be kind – Jim Cobb
